Intranet Migration to SharePoint Online without Disrupting Business Processes
Client
The Client, a US healthcare company, provides disability and absence management services.
Challenge
The Client approached ScienceSoft with a request to migrate data from its intranet portal based on SharePoint Server 2010 to Office 365. It was required to move all the content, including all document versions and metadata to the cloud. Besides, the Client wanted to migrate the security groups and retain the same permissions model in a new Office 365 solution.
Solution
After carefully reviewing the Client’s requirements, ScienceSoft’s team proceeded with the implementation of a cloud solution on Office 365 SharePoint Online without customizations and third-party integrations. Not to hamper user activities during the migration process, ScienceSoft’s team enabled them to change and upload new content to the cloud intranet portal on SharePoint Online.
The project consisted of 3 stages:
- The verification of the Client’s on-premises environment and the configuration of SharePoint Online for data migration.
- Intranet portal content migration and the configuration of general security settings.
- Site testing and the verification of data integrity.
It took 4 days to complete the intranet portal migration to SharePoint Online. To make the process more convenient, our team developed a specialized console application. Using the console application, ScienceSoft’s team made several pilot migrations to verify integrity of the transferred data. As a result, the team was sure that all the content, document versions, metadata, security groups and permissions were migrated to Office 365 correctly.
Results
The Client got a cloud-based intranet portal on SharePoint Online deployed on the Client’s Office 365 account. The intranet portal content migration was done according to all the Client’s requirements and the project implementation didn’t affect business processes or user activities. The Client retained integrity of the portal data as well as the specified security groups and permissions model. Migration of the portal to Office 365 SharePoint Online allowed the Client to leverage all the benefits of the cloud environment, including flexibility, affordability and high security.
